Hi everyone, Just found this forum.

My mother must suffer from some kind of shrimp allergy, but it's odd. (She's 75)

She has no symptoms of hives or anything like that, just all of a sudden she throws up. Then she's fine. It happens about 1-2 hours after eating shrimp.

but here's the WEIRD thing: it's only grilled or cocktail shrimp. She can eat fried shrimp. As far as I know, there's no problem with crab or lobster, although I'm not sure she's eaten much of those. She eats a lot of salmon and other fish, no problem.

The other night I was having grilled shrimp at a restaurant, and she had one bite. Sure enough, she got sick an hour or two later, then was fine.

Does this make any sense?

Hmmm, an typical allergic reaction is the body's reaction to the protein in a food. That wouldn't change depending on the cooking method. Still, something is going on. Has she been to an allergist?

She should get to an allergist -- and soon -- and avoid all shellfish until she's had it checked out.

Shellfish is a common late onset allergy (that is, it starts sometime in adulthood). I got it at age 31. Like your mom, I'd been eating shrimp, sometimes without incident, sometimes getting ill afterward. I never put it together as food allergy, though. Thought it was a sauce that didn't agree one time, a flu another.

Then one day I had severe anaphylaxis after eating a plate of shrimp, and was taken to the ER. Having hives was the big clue it was allergy, and I think I would have cottoned on if there had been hives with earlier incidents. The fact is, they are not always present in food allergy.

I sure would not recommend waiting until this happens with someone in her 70s. Get it checked out.
