Talking Allergies

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to give people who buy cold cuts at the deli to be careful of Mortedela that contains Pistachios. You can not tell by looking at it that it contains this.

I was at the deli at my local bakery today and they have just started selling it.
Oh well, I'll just have to buy a meat slicer now and do it myself.

Just in case you're searching, it's actually spelled Mortadella. Not all Mortadella has pistachios in it, but some do.

Thia ia why I don't trust anything at a deli counter. If they sliced the cheese in the slicer and then sliced something as basic as cooked ham or roast beef...ugh.

It's just not worth it.

P.S. - I'm loving my meat slicer!

Mortadella isn't cheese, it's a cold cut. Kinda like a salami, but different.

Some supermarkets keep cheese & meet slicers separate. Most delis are willing to clean the slicer if you ask nicely and they aren't busy.

That is good to know. If we only had one allergy I might be willing to try if they offered to clean the slicer. As it is I would still feel there would be too high a risk of "may contain".

I would feel that everything would have come on contact with cheesy hands at sometime and just not be comfortable.

This is why I never buy anything at the deli counter. Cheeses are also often cut on the slicing machines... it is just not worth the risk.

And for me, unless they were willing to take apart the machine and wash it with bleach, it would not be clean enough to remove the risk of cross-contamination. We have a slicer at home and it is very hard to clean - slicing meat (and cheese) results in lots of little bits stuck in little corners.
