I have a new cedar deck. I was surprised to find that most oil based stains contain tung oil (china tree oil) from the tung tree nut. In woodworking forums there are allergy warnings to not use tung oil if you are severely allergic to tree nuts. Other oil options are brazilian rosewood oil from a brazilian tree nut or echo friendly soy oil based products.

My kids are tree nut, peanut and fish allergic. I would also like to avoid soy since it is one of the top 10 allergens.

Has anyone come across this issue? One company informed me that they would recommend I don't buy their deck stain since it has oil from a tree nut. My allergist has said that the risk is low. I would prefer to find a transparent deck stain oil that is no risk. Can anyone recommend a product?

Note that tung oils or even walnut oils may be used to finish chopping boards, wooden salad bowls and kitchen counters.. Yikes!

Can an allergic person have more than just contact allergic reactions from wood stains?
