Monday morning I had to go for full PFT testing including a methacholine challenge to see how well my maitenence inhailers were working on my adult onset asthma. At the time of the testing, I showed no signifigant signs of reacting to the methacholine - in other words, it didn't affect my spirometry readings at the time. However, 2 hrs later, I was feeling really off, and having a hard time breathing. By the time I saw my allergist in the afternoon, she had noted that I was having a signifigantly difficult issue with my breathing and wanted to do an in office spirometry on me (but her machine wasn't working - so she couldn't).

Good news is that 1) my asthma maitenence med is working well on day to day maitenence, 2) I can continue with allergy shots.
Bad news 1) I keep reacting to more and more foods, so much so, that she is no longer having me bother to bring them in for testing/confirmation. 2) We don't know exactly WHAT is up with the delayed reaction to the methacholine challenge test is about.

I get to go back in a couple months to repeat the methacholine challenge - this time I need to be off my maitenence inhailer for a few weeks first.

Has anyone heard of delayed reactions to the methacholine challenges? Why would this happen? Is there any signifigance to this?

Thanks.

Dawne
