Talking Allergies

Has anyone had any experience with an anaphylaxic reaction caused by traces of nut oil/residue on fruit or vegetables? DD went into full anaphylaxis last night and I can't figure out what it could be.

Was the fruit from a grocery store or market that also sells loose nuts? It might be worth questioning the handling of these. e.g. is there possible cross-contact in the handling - bins, gloves?

I would also advise CFIA (Can. Food Insp. Agency), because they track allergic reactions and it does affect their labelling changes.

She is fine now. I rinsed all the fruit but maybe I need to be more vigilant and wash with fruit and veg. wash.

I hate allergies.

What if you peel the fruit? I've heard that may help.

I've thought about this after hearing of another allergy mom's experience at a store where they were emptying a box of loose peanuts into a bin right by the fruit/veg area, and there was dust from the peanuts flying everywhere.

After that, I have been diligent about washing loose fruit/veg, and will also peel fruit, esp if it's not organic. If it is organic, then I wash the outside with warm water and soap before rinsing and eating.

Good luck in finding the culprit - it must be so frustrating to not know what caused it.

I hate to even suggest this but...could she have developed an allergy to a fruit or vegetable?

Daughter: asthma, allergies to egg, milk, peanuts, tree nuts, most legumes (not soy) & penicillin. Developing hayfever type allergies.
Husband: no allergies
Me: allergies to some tree that flowers in May
Cat: allergic to beef, pork and lamb

I hope not...sigh. We go for our allergist check up next month so I guess I'll find out then.

I always avoid any fruit/vege that's even remotely close to my allergens for the simple fact that people use their hands to check these fruits/veges. And washing everything is a must, even if I'm going to be peeling it after.

I hate it when they have loose peanuts in the fruit/vege section, too. I usually end up taking a deep breath and really motoring past. You'd think with the peanut allergies there are these days, that open bins of peanuts would become a thing of the past!
