Now this is scary! :frightened
Quote:
I recently purchased from Wal-Mart in Oakville, Ontario a large package of
Creamy Caramels distributed by Regal Confections in Laval Quebec.
The ingredients list on the outside of the package does not disclose any
information about peanut/tree nut allergens. It is not until you open the
package and tear open the cellophane (which is very easy to ripe) and are
able to read the very tiny white print on the cellophane, is there any
mention about "may contain peanut/tree nuts". The print on the cellophane
is difficult to read and can tear very easily.

This has been reported to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Digital
photos of the product has been emailed to the Canadian Food Inspection
Agency. I thought it was extremely important to report this as my daughter
does have a peanut allergy. She was the one who noticed the print on the
cellophane.

Sorry if some pics are too big-I wanted to keep the info readable. I'll try to tweak it later.

It isn't on the bag, I ripped it all open. It is on the individual wrapper that each tiny caramel is wrapped in.

I don't have time but Susan would you post this under allergy alerts.

OMG :verymad

I'm obviously haveing difficulty posting the pics but...
Regal Creamy Caramels are not labelled on the outer bag as such but the individual cellophane wrapper (which tears easily) has writing along the folded edge stating it contains: Coconut Oil & Palm Kernel Oil and may also contain Peanut/Tree Nut & Eggs.
The outer bag ingredients list: sugar, corn syrup, whole milk, hydrogenated vegetable oil (may contain palm, cottonseed, soy oil), whey powder, salt, soy lecithin, mono & digylcerides, artificial flavouring and sulphites.
The words "Palm" and "Sulphites" is bolded as an attempt to bring attention to the allergens (never mind the whole milk?)
Need any more reason to push government to act on their promises to pass the new food label regulations into law - after a review process?

I used this example in my letter to the PM and MP on allergen labelling. Seriously - you can't open the big bag at the grocery store to find out if the inner labelling matches, so how are labels like this helpful for allergic folks? :banghead

Unbelievable!! So you don't get the warning til you've bought, opened, and possibly consumed a caramel! :verymad

REGAL told me in Oct. over and over that they had NO peanuts or tree nuts and the cello wraps used were old stock and that the caramels were 100% safe. Tonight I saw a package of the caramels and out of curiosity I read the back...get this..it now has a warning for peanuts, tree nuts and egg protein!!! UM, if they were soo safe before then why the recently added warning? Glad the warning is there but it contradicts what they were saying in the fall.
So am I now to assume they were NOT safe before and they were lying???? Glad I gave the entire bag to the CFIA and didn't keep any!!

Did you get any follow up from the CFIA? I always wonder what happened....especially with something like this, where things just don't feel right.

Maybe we need MarketPlace or W-5 to do a story on this!

The CFIA woman was amazing. She also let me know that there were dozens of files going on this exact product but :thumbsup they still respond (collect) from each person who called in. When I called she called back within a couple hours and was here the next day at our home. Allergies she said go fast track in the system. :thumbsup
She called me back once after being here to let me know that the product was in the diagnosis stage but that the file was being investigated. For final results we can go to some public access site or something. I should look into that or call her and see how it works.

I have to say I won't trust a Regal product again!!!

I don't trust them either, I picked up a package of valentine something, and when I saw it was Regal I put it back. This is EXACTLY the kind of thing that well meaning outsiders don't GET. And are offended when they pick up some 'safe' Regal candy at the store.

It's exhausting, isn't it?

I think this is what she meant:
Quote:
You can request more information through the Access to Information Act.

This law allows any person or corporation in Canada to submit an official request for Government of Canada records. All federal government institutions, including the CFIA, must make every reasonable effort to help anyone making an access to information request. The identity of all requesters is protected.

Thanks Susan for the link. I checked and there is a 5$ fee to access the information. I already gave away a 5$ bag of caramels, Regal isn't worth 10$. :|
When I called in the fall Regal the secretary was very annoyed with all the phone calls that day regarding the same issue. She was huffing that they are safe in a basically 'relax' type attitude. Wonder how many people did in fact keep the caramels and eat them. Scary now as it does appear that they weren't safe - or why add the warning for not just pn and tn but for egg, that can't be a coincidence.!!! Even if for some reason they now are made on a different line it just seems odd the timing of it all? Regardless, won't feed DS their products.
