Now this is scary! :frightened
Quote:
I recently purchased from Wal-Mart in Oakville, Ontario a large package of
Creamy Caramels distributed by Regal Confections in Laval Quebec.
The ingredients list on the outside of the package does not disclose any
information about peanut/tree nut allergens. It is not until you open the
package and tear open the cellophane (which is very easy to ripe) and are
able to read the very tiny white print on the cellophane, is there any
mention about "may contain peanut/tree nuts". The print on the cellophane
is difficult to read and can tear very easily.

This has been reported to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Digital
photos of the product has been emailed to the Canadian Food Inspection
Agency. I thought it was extremely important to report this as my daughter
does have a peanut allergy. She was the one who noticed the print on the
cellophane.

Sorry if some pics are too big-I wanted to keep the info readable. I'll try to tweak it later.

:frightened :frightened :frightened :frightened :frightened

It isn't on the bag, I ripped it all open. It is on the individual wrapper that each tiny caramel is wrapped in.
:frightened :frightened :frightened :frightened
I don't have time but Susan would you post this under allergy alerts.

OMG :verymad

I'm obviously haveing difficulty posting the pics but...
Regal Creamy Caramels are not labelled on the outer bag as such but the individual cellophane wrapper (which tears easily) has writing along the folded edge stating it contains: Coconut Oil & Palm Kernel Oil and may also contain Peanut/Tree Nut & Eggs.
The outer bag ingredients list: sugar, corn syrup, whole milk, hydrogenated vegetable oil (may contain palm, cottonseed, soy oil), whey powder, salt, soy lecithin, mono & digylcerides, artificial flavouring and sulphites.
The words "Palm" and "Sulphites" is bolded as an attempt to bring attention to the allergens (never mind the whole milk?)
Need any more reason to push government to act on their promises to pass the new food label regulations into law - after a review process?
:banghead

I called REGAL, the customer service agent said the product is 100% safe, they just ok'd the supplier to use an old batch of celo wrappers not thinking it would be an issue. :banghead
I told her such a reckless decision has make me think twice about the safety of all REGAL products including candy canes and ROCKETS etc.

I still don't know if I believe them. I know I won't keep these in the house now in case DS gets into them. Although they were for us to eat and not DS . I only bring into our home foods that would be safe in case of an accidental ingestion due to his age but that is irrelevant, they should be able to provide safe allergy labelng.

I am NOT impressed at all. I feel even more badly as I personally recommended these to other people looking for safe caramels. Way to give parents a heart attack. Amazing that the allergy warning was even noticed as each cello wrapper is cut randomly and some squares happen to have a full warning, others only have part of a warning.

Thank you so much for posting!! I too bought these, mostly for myself, but let my PA son try them. No reaction after full ingestion.

After reading the "Laura Secord" post then this one it just makes me shake my head.
