DD has her first ear infection, and thus her first round of antibiotics. She is 4 years old and has a peanut allergy, eczema & asthma. Tonight after 48 hours on the medication her arms and trunk broke out in hives and her face turned red. I gave her Benedryl and they quickly cleared up (within 10 minutes). I spoke with the pharmacist who agreed that this sounds like a classic reaction to the antibiotics. DD is now fast asleep but I doubt that I will get much shut-eye whilst worrying about another flare up. I'm wondering if I under reacted and if I should have gave her the epi.

Any thoughts? What would you have done?

Sorry she had a reaction, but I'm glad you were able to get it under control.

It's so hard to know what to do when faced with a reaction that is not caused by known allergens. Her asthma puts her at an increased risk as her breathing is already compromised. I'm sure I read that Benedryl is not recommended for those with asthma as it can mask the symptoms. (I'll have to find the reference.)

The main thing is that she's OK. Mention this to her allergist, I'm sure that s/he can give you advice and you'll need to know what medications to avoid in the future.

I hope she's feeling better soon.
