Just wanted to pass this along because I'd never thought of this happening. My DS, 15 months, was LICKED by our neighbour's dog and ended up with hives all over his face and neck. We got him checked out in the ER and he didn't have any respiratory problems, thankfully, but still it was an awful few hours of itching, crying and worrying.

The dog had been eating peanut butter. Who knew (I sure didn't): dogs love peanut butter and owners often spread it on their biscuits.

It brought to mind that we really need to tell EVERYONE that we know about our child's allergy. We don't share food with these neighbours, so had never told them about his allergy. And be extra careful with dogs, who eat everything and love to spread it around. !!!

I have a dog and many treats are peanut butter flavor. Being allergic I never buy but them. So it is not only the owners giving peanut butter from the jar. The treats are being made that way. :frightened

Paige thanks for posting your experience, I'm glad your son is Ok. I was shocked when reading dog treats just how many contain tree nuts and peanut butter. I had forgotten until you mentioned it that many people fill the kongs (those hollow hard rubber balls) with peanut butter for dogs. :| Great reminder to be careful when we least expect it.

Well, now you and the neighbours know... we often fill DD's (as in Dear Dog) kong w/ peanut butter, he loves it and sweet potatoe??Here I notice someone, or maybe the golf course eats a lot of peanuts, as I often fiind shells in my back yard.....maybe someone puts peanuts out for the birds? or squirrels..? We have a furface and check to make sure his treats don't have eggs...many do.
Aborden, :huggy to you and your DS....

Your story is a good one for non-believers to understand the severity of allergies. I imagine your neighbours will always remember your son's allergy now.

So... dd = dear daughter and DD = Dear Dog

I'll have to be careful on that one but thankfully my dd's don't read the forum

How scary!! But yes, peanut butter is a very common treat for dogs, esp in Kongs, but like others have said many treats are made with peanut butter.

Just for like the products we consume, I always call dog food/treat companies to find out about cross contamination etc...

One more thing to worry about.
