My sister just got a walnut wood with walnut oil salad bowl as a house warming gift. She is going to be having a house warming party next weekend and wants to make a salad in the bowl. When I read the tag on the bowl it said walnut wood sealed with walnut oil. Is this safe for someone with a tree nut allergy?

I'd be curious to know the answer, but in the meantime, I wouldn't chance it. . . .

Walnut oil makes me react, so I wouldn't eat anything from that bowl.

I'm interested to see how others weigh in on this topic.

Dr. Watson, one of our 2 Ask the Allergist experts, got asked this question a year ago in Allergic Living.
Here's that Q & A:

Q My daughter has allergies to tree nuts, peanuts and sesame. We recently purchased a handcrafted wooden salad bowl sealed with walnut oil that’s derived from the walnut husk and shell, not the meat. The oil penetrates the wooden bowl to form a hard seal. Both the craftsman and the walnut oil distributor indicated they had investigated but have never heard of an allergic reaction from anyone using their products. Is it likely a person with nut allergies would have a reaction eating salad from such a bowl?

Dr. Watson: Your question is an interesting one. Most tree nut allergens identified to date are seed storage proteins that are not found in the shell or husk. The fact that the oil penetrates the bowl and forms a hard seal would suggest that there would be very little chance of any proteins leaching from the bowl.

I realize I keep saying this over and over in this column, but I give the same advice to my patients all the time: if you are concerned, don’t use the bowl for your daughter. There are alternatives.

Thanks for the interesting Q&A, Gwen. It's nice to know it isn't a hazard. Can't say I could bring myself to buy/use one at home, and nice to know there is no danger with wood bowls others use. :)
