Schools must be accountable for keeping students safe!

Although our schools do not have nurses on staff, any child with medical needs must complete detailed health forms which are reviewed by the Public Health Nurses. Each school may organize it different but at our high school, there is a binder in the office that has all of the forms which is easy for any staff to access in event of emergency. Spare epis are also in an unlocked drawer next to the reception secretary. The employment postings for para-educators indicate that first aid training is required. When I work with a student who carries an inhaler or epi-pen I always ask where they keep it!

At our high school, at the beginning of the school year, a Public Health Nurse does a review for all staff of the medical needs of students regardless of whether you work with the student or not. A video about anaphylaxis is shown and there are enough epi-pen trainers for everyone. There is one teacher with extensive first aid training who is the First Responder.

Last year 911 was called a few times and the First Responder handled some other situations as well.

I think it is even harder in high school because every hour it is a different group of students. It is really difficult to remember medical needs of lots of students. Thankfully kids watch out for each other too.
