I emailed Duncan Hines to inquire about possible contamination with peanuts and nuts in their cake mixes and frostings. They don't recommend that people with these allergies consume their products. They do not list a "may contain" on their labels.

My email:

Can you tell me what production lines are used for your specific cake mixes and if there is a possibility of cross-contamination with nuts and peanuts? Are the production lines for cake mixes and frostings peanut and nut-free (i.e. dedicated lines?) Or are other peanut/nut products manufactured on these same lines?

Here is their reply:

Thank you for taking the time to email us. The lines our Duncan Hines®
Mixes and Frostings are run on, are cleaned very well in between. If any
mix contains peanuts or tree nuts, either the whole day is dedicated to
those products or they are run at the end of day. For issues as sensitive
as an allergic reaction, the best suggestion would be not to consume the
product in case of a chance of cross contamination. Contact us again if
we can be of assistance in the future.

Why on earth wouldn't Duncan Hines say "may contain nuts" on their packaging? I often will bake cakes using cake mixes for my children b/c I thought they were safe. *sigh* Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. :)

SAHM of 3 children. Oldest DS (1999) is anaphylactic to peanuts.

Canuckmommy, Please check out Betty Crocker cake mixes - they are safe for the nut allergic! There is a thread somewhere on this forum regarding Betty Crocker cake mixes, and these particular cake mixes are safe (at least right now they are).
