My friend and I were discussing today that she heard that children with animal allergies can be bothered by being around their classmates who have fuury little pets at home. The dander is present on the kids clothes and then makes its way into the classroom. The allergic kids can have reactions to their classmates and then feel itchy, sinusy, asthmatic etc. and thus not perform at their best at school because of it. Any one with kids with animal allergies experience this?

My daughter also seems bothered by the material (wood shavings) that surrounds the playground equiptment. She gets itchy, mucousy around it, and gets a swollen, hivey scratch if it even barely scratches it. Any one else with playground material reactions?

I've heard about the animal allergy problem too--but it's hard to say whether I had problems with this in school. When in highschool or junior high definitely not--in the lower grades I had out of control asthma and never really paid that much attention to the triggers (other than exercise--that was the obvious one).

My father has major asthma attacks when he is around sawdust. His asthma hasn't been diagnosed--he doesn't think he needs to go to a doctor since he only has an attack on the very rare occasion (like once every few years if he gets too much exercise in the cold or is exposed to sawdust) and then he uses one of my sister's rescue inhalers.

I recently experienced this myself. My brother-in-law' family recently got a cat. When we got together with them at Christmas time at my MIL's house I got stuffed up and couldn't figure out why. I realized later that it must have been from the BIL's family carrying the dander on their clothes.
