Hello,

My 3 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with a cashew allergy (anaphylactic). I'm now avoiding all tree nuts but I was wondering if there are specifically any hidden or alternative names for cashews and cashew products. Everything I'm finding on the Internet is pretty general and lump all tree nuts in together. Even if we are avoiding all tree nuts, I'd still like to know where hidden cashews may be hiding.

Thanks!

B.

I do not know of any other names for cashews, but as you are already doing, you should avoid all nuts for her. Here are some names that you may not be familiar with.

gianduja--creamy mixture of chocolate and chopped nuts found in premium or imported chocolates

marzipan--almond paste

nougat

filbert--hazelnut

I wish you all the best as you learn to cope with this allergy. Luckily there are many resources available today

You may wish to refer to Hidden sources and alternative names of foods causing adverse reactions reported in the scientific literature and by Canadian government inspection agencies which can be found in a document on the CFIA website at:

http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/fssa/labeti/allerg/allergense.shtml

If you back up to their Food Allergen page you can access several other documents on Food Allergens:

http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/fssa/labeti/allerg/allerge.shtml

At the bottom of the left side menu on the above page is a link to contact information for CFIA offices that deal with food labelling.
