Hi, I am the Mom of a 10 year old girl who is anaphylactic to peanuts and some tree nuts, cats (and possibly dogs). I have promised her a budgie, and then realized that seeds will contain nuts.

Does anyone out there have a pet bird, and if so, what do you feed it?

One plus of this situation is finding this forum. The magazine is amazing and this is a bonus.

Thanks,

Karen D. in Ottawa

P.S. Thanks to Karen at OASG for pointing me to this.

Hi Karen D.

Welcome to the forum.

I would suggest you repeat your post under "Shopping" and "Peanut allergy", as they are more specific and perhaps more people would read it there.

I also have a dilemma with bird seeds. I like to feed birds and most commercial bird seeds contain peanuts or are processed with peanuts. I only buy nyjer seeds and don't let my daughter handle them, I fill the feeder outside and wash my hands thoroughly after. I have a friend with a daughter also allergic to peanuts and tree nuts and she found a local person who sells his own bird seed mix which is free of peanuts. I'll have to ask her about that.

I will try to research a commercial brand on the net and see if there's anything for budgies.

Nicole, thanks so much for your reply and help. I wonder if your friend's bird seed source would be willing to ship to me and I would pay all shipping costs?

I'm desperate - can you tell?!!

Regards,

Karen

Any luck with the nut-free birdseed? Have you tried some of the smaller pet stores?

No luck yet. That's a good idea about trying smaller pet stores. The big ones carry the large manufacturer's products which all have nuts.

Thanks,
Karen

Hi,

I just found this on the peanut allergy website:

www.prettybird.com

The post there says the Pretty Bird Premium Canary Food does not contain peanuts and says so on the back of the bag. Hope they can ship to you.
