Talking Allergies

I have known I was allergic to fish since age 2 or 3 years, I am now 38. I was tested once, maybe twice, the last test was in 1989. At this time I was tested for 'fish' and 'shellfish' and was positive for fish and negative for shellfish. My question is.....do they now test for specific fish (tuna, salmon etc...)

Yes, they can test for specific fish. I know my husband had SPT for different fish. I can't remember if blood was drawn for a RAST.

Skin tests can be done for specific fishes and fish families too. My mom has a fish allergy, but some of them she could still eat. Ask your allergist for more information on this.

Just had our daughter tested for trout and it came up positive. She's been eating canned tuna and breaded white fish. She took a bite of trout and we had to give the epipen; within minutes she told us her throat was sore and we could tell she was swelling up and having breathing difficulties.

The skin test confirmed an allergy to trout, but still negative to salmon and white fish i.e. cod. We were told to continue with the same fish we ate before, but to avoid trout, including "inhaling" trout.

My oldest is the same - some fish (including trout, sole and haddock) are off-limits to him, while others (such as tilapia and halibut) are okay.

For a long time we avoided all fish (once he was diagnosed) but then his diet was so limited that we asked the allergist if we could test for a selection to see if he was okay with some of them. And thank God, he was!

It's helped a lot to have a few more sources of protein. Tilapia is awesome - by far my favourite fish now, with halibut a close second (but more expensive I believe).

Our oldest is very allergic to salmon and arctic char, but can eat tuna, anchovies and sardines. We rarely feed her any fish because we don't know if the younger ones are allergic or not.

I can't wait for ds to be tested for individual species. I have a gut feeling Salmon will turn up but I'm hoping Tuna will be safe. Before he was tested he had both and the salmon he kept scratching at his tongue after (we figured he didn't like the flavor) he was only 12 months at the time.
