Ok here is my paranoid parenting coming into play.
My husband bought a spinach dip with "water chestnut" on the ingredient list. He assured me that water chestnut is not a nut.

The FAAN website states "The water chestnut is not a nut; it is an edible portion of a plant root known as a "corm." It is safe for someone who is allergic to tree nuts."

So why am I hesitant to open this dip?
Anyone else have experiences with water chestnuts?

Cathy
mom to Jacob, 4yrs old, ana to peanuts and potentially tree nuts.

I can see how the word would create a psychological "barrier".

I personally hate water chestnuts so we never have them in the house.

On the one hand, I'm sure FAAN is correct and if I loved them I would probably have them in the house, just as we do nutmeg and coconut. But if it's going to stress you out that much... well, life is a bit too short. :)

But on the third hand (LOL) ... an allergist once told a friend of mine (who is hyper-vigilant, and was perhaps being a bit too extreme at the time) that at some point you do have to have some trust in the foods that are available... (But then we hear so many stories of cross-contamination that I realize you have to take that advice with a grain of salt, as it were!)

Probably not much help, I'm afraid. Just my 2 cents!!

Thanks Karen,

Funny, that although FAAN says water chestnuts are not nuts, I needed the reassurance of another FA parent.
I feel really silly about this post now. Oh well, I can be the neurotic parent poster-child for the non-supportive folks out there who "don't get" food allergies! Ha!

Don't feel silly - we've all been there and done that.

It took us about 2.5 years to try fish on my youngest (at the age of 5 1/2) after our allergist gave us the green light. And he's never been allergic to fish. I just couldn't handle the thought of a reaction - it just didn't seem worth it.

And a friend of mine has been getting up the nerve to try eggs on her young daughter for about a year now... the allergist wants her to try eggs before he will test her for egg allergy, but my friend also doesn't really want to deal with a reaction. (Her son is allergic to eggs so you can see the psychological barrier there.)

So you're not alone, and you're not neurotic. It's a lot for the mind to cope with some days.

I had the same problem with a dip. My allergist happened to call with a query and so I asked him and he said no - they are not nuts! And my son did eat the dip and is fine.
(Allergic to peanuts, tree nuts and sesame)

You are not alone!
