Hi All,

My chiropractor has recommended that I take fish pills daily for Omega-3. Only problem is, I'm severally anaphylactic to fish! However, he swears that the pills contain no fish protein so I wouldn't be allergic. I'm refusing to take the pills, of course, since I almost died when I was 5 from just touching fish. But I was just curious as to whether any of you have heard similar things about fish pills. How can they be called fish pills if they contain no protein??? I'm confused! I don't want docotrs to be giving out dangerous information, but my chiropractor is very holistic and very well-researched, still, this just does not seem right! Help!

Caroline

Are you talking about something like Cod Liver Oil capsules? There is fish in there.

(I do not have a fish allergy.)

I haven't heard anything about them, but I wouldn't touch them without contacting the company directly. And to be honest, I wouldn't touch them, period.

Just because someone is a specialist in one field does not mean s/he is a specialist in another. A chiropractor is neither an allergist nor a dietitian/nutritionist with a special interest in allergies.

thanks, we have a bottle at home (my Mom takes them) and it's Omega-3 Fish Pills and they have to stay refrigerated. But, yeah, even if a dietitian and/or allergist okayed it, I still wouldn't take them!

If you are looking for omega 3 there are other sources besides fish. My husband is allergic to fish so I don't eat it either. We use omega fortified soy beverage and it is fortified with flax oil. Flax and hemp oils are also great sources of omega 3. I have bottled hemp oil (flax comes bottled as well) which I use to make salad dressings.

Dietary Sources

Fish oils and plant oils are the primary dietary source of omega-3 fatty acids. Another potential source of omega-3 fatty acids is New Zealand green lipped mussels (Perna canaliculus),used for centuries by the Maories to promote good health. EPA and DHA are found in cold-water fish such as salmon, mackerel, halibut, sardines, and herring. ALA is found in flaxseeds, flaxseed oil, canola (rapeseed) oil, soybeans, soybean oil, pumpkin seeds, pumpkin seed oil, purslane, perilla seed oil, walnuts, and walnut oil.

DO NOT TOUCH FISH PILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!

No matter what you are told (except by a board certified allergist, but they would never tell you they are safe!), fish pills have fish in them! Many years ago, I was told I should start taking fish pills... because that chiropractor was under the false impression that if you eat a little of your allergen every day, you will be cured! Well, you'll be cured because you'll be dead!

If you want to fallow the new fashion of Omega-3, there are other sources that are safe!

(you needed to add my 2 cents as I've been there before...)
