Thanks for comments, but need to clarify. You can bring foods from home, e.g. sandwiches, but they have to be well-contained to be able to go through x-ray machine. The restrictions from the TSA are on liquid or semi-liquid foods.

I always bring my own sandwich - esp. because I travel enough that I run into flight delays or overbooked flights and will need to eat.

For more specifics see: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/holiday.shtm

While all the precautions mentioned here are excellent (and I have used them many times during my travels), please remember that at least in the US, you cannot bring food from home on board any aircraft. Any food brought with you from home will be confiscated and destroyed by TSA. The only food permitted on board must be purchased from the airport food courts or during flight, so you still have to be cautious about what you purchase for you or your child. For me, if the flight is 5 hours or less, I eat before I leave home so that I am satisfied and won't need to consume anything on the flight.
