The team at Allergic Living were honoured to be awarded the Susan Dagleish Award for Corporate Community Service at Anaphylaxis Canada’s spring conference on May 7, 2011. The award was presented to Gwen Smith by Susan Dagleish, the woman who began the first food allergy awareness and education group in Canada in 1964.
Smith said the magazine’s staff are extremely grateful for the award, which was given in part to recognize Allergic Living’s advocacy efforts, such as Canada’s food allergy and gluten labeling regulations, which recently passed following years of delay.
That was a team effort, with Anaphylaxis Canada, the Canadian Celiac Association and the CSACI all playing pivotal roles in lobbying Ottawa. Allergic Living’s contribution was a two-round write-in campaign – which resulted in over 8,000 letters from individuals to the Prime Minister. The letters stressed the importance of clear allergen and gluten labels for those with life-threatening allergies or celiac disease.
Smith said she was particularly appreciative of receiving the award on Anaphylaxis Canada’s 10th Anniversary and to receive it from Dagleish, a trailblazing advocate. Smith reminded the audience of how far food allergy advocacy has come. “Imagine,” she noted, “when Susan Dagleish was advocating for her allergic daughter, there were no auto-injectors; no school plans and no food allergen labeling at all.”
Dr. Susan Waserman was honoured with the Individual Award for Community Service, in recognition of her many efforts on behalf of the allergy community. This is includes being a contributor to Allergic Living magazine and serving as medical adviser to Anaphylaxis Canada.
