Great column. We've had to blaze new trail in creating an allergy safe school for our 4-yr old and your comments about balance vs bans are right on, especially when it comes to generating support from the community. The challenge we're faced with is that the school (principal?) is unwilling to set "reasonable" guidelines but rather, prefers the language of bans and absolutes on the advice of the board.

This makes it very hard to gain the support of other parents, as you point out, because they are feeling that their rights are being trampled, the restrictions are unduly onerous, and we are transferring the burden of responsibility to them.

Making matters even worse, the bans are poorly understood and poorly enforced.

We're crossing our fingers and trying to exert change a little bit at a time... not a fun introduction to the education system.
